Serendipity by Youri Messen-Jaschin

We were excited to see the variety of media used by artists in this year's paper art competition, showcasing the nearly limitless potential of paper as a medium. Submissions included everything from traditional techniques like watercolor, gouache, acrylic, oil pastel, soft pastels, charcoal drawing, graphite, ink, colored pencil, and markers to more unconventional materials such as sand, hair, paint thinner, lipstick, nail polish, and even botanical dyeing on cotton paper with medicinal plants from Peru. Artists experimented with diverse methods including cyanotype on paper, monoprint with braille, batik on Ginwashi paper, and digital giclée prints. We also saw innovative combinations like mixed media, collage and acrylic, gel pen on paper drawing, photo-based digital art, and archival-glued, pressed, and carved 4-ply Bristol paper. The range extended to the use of Pigma Micron Pens, Winsor & Newton Watercolors, screen printing, and even the incorporation of vintage book and periodical images on white Arches paper. This wide array of techniques and materials highlights the creativity and versatility of the artists who participated in the call.
