With this body of work William Butcher explores the line between the physical, mysterious, illusive, and often spiritual nature of human beings. His figures meld with their surroundings suggesting a sense of continuum between person, place and state of being. In the artist's eye we are not so much distinct individuals but rather integral parts of the fabric of the universe.

The nine featured paintings span a decade of work by the artist whose own methodology changed as he worked. Initial paintings such as The Model Maker and The Vanity Mirror were born out of careful drawing studies and planning while later paintings like The Earthbound Scholar and The Fractured Man evolved more freely as the artist worked intuitively directly on the canvas.
