"In my photography, I am searching for images borne of a deep and beautiful silence, that although ambiguous, point beyond themselves...I find a subtle profundity in things partially seen, illuminated, but hidden in shadow."

Fred Zafran's photographs offer a quiet exploration into the constructed spaces we inhabit. He turns his lens to our streets, our interiors, and our undergrounds. He creates images with a cinematic-like quality, spotlighting individuals with light. The work is formal and non-judgemental, and each photograph feels like an excerpt from a scene in a movie. The control of the aesthetic, the saturated colors, and the command of light and shadow feels managed by a director, yet none of the photographs are staged. Some larger story is happening, and it is up to the viewer to imagine the context.
Fred Zafran lives in Loudoun County, VA. He devotes most of his time to travel and photography in small towns and cities in the USA and abroad. He is a juried artist of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, a member of the Multiple Exposures Gallery in Alexandria, VA, and exhibits his work throughout the DC metro area.
