An artist since 2009,Jessalyn Finch, earned her B.S. in Fine Art with a focus on printmaking and drawing from UW-La Crosse. After initially stepping back from art, she returned in 2018, receiving an Emerging Artist Grant for "Shadow Form: The Human Body’s Secret Life," a collection of life-size figure drawings. During the pandemic, Finch expanded her exploration of body perception into sculpture, creating wearable pieces for live performances. Recently, her focus has shifted to examining her own experiences with body dysmorphia, blending large-scale drawings with sculpture. Her work prompts audiences to reflect on their own bodies and self-awareness. Finch has exhibited at Rochester Art Center, NE Sculpture Gallery Factory and will exhibit in Seattle in early 2025. She continues to create in her Minnesota studio.
Artist Statement
My body of work intertwines sculpture and large-scale drawing to delve into the intricacies of our experiences and perceptions of the human body. In my current artistic exploration, I am delving into themes of self-perception, identity, and how that relates to our environment. These profound topics are intended to serve as a catalyst for meaningful discussions and connections through shared experiences.
My artist roots lie in large-scale charcoal drawings. In my portfolio, you will find expansive figures on paper, approximately 8 feet in size. My drawing technique is centered on instilling a sense of movement and energy in each piece, achieved through a fusion of surrealism with anatomical realism.
In response to the challenges posed by the pandemic, I expanded my artistic repertoire to include sculpture, starting with cardboard wearable pieces to use in performances. This exploration has grown into larger interactive works. My sculpture technique mimics my drawing style but deconstructs the human form on a different level.
My ultimate goal is to prompt the audience to contemplate their own bodies within the context of their life's narrative, considering how this self-awareness influences their interactions with the environment and other and contributes to their overall quality of life. Through my work, I aim to illuminate the human form as both a prison and a vessel of creation, the origin from which all experiences emanate.
