In this body of work, Michelle Mattei explored what she tems as a transitional state of being where we have just awakened, are in a state of bliss and have yet to land back in our skin. She focused on that moment, where we experience "weightlessness and transparency." While shooting this series, she "discovered that these evolutionary states manifest ideas of development and growth indicative of our struggle to exist, to morph, to transform from one state to the next. They reflect the birthing of the self, the struggle to become who we are, the emergence of life, the liminal state between being and not being."
